  • Campaign:  'Plastic-free Periods' which, to date, has directly reached over 4M people and includes a schools pilot currently being run in 22 schools with 6,000 students.
If you could invite 1 person to a dinner party – who would it be and why?
Given you’ve not said dead or alive, I’d invite the Sufi mystic poet Hafiz. We’d eat some nice food, drink some wine and talk about our shared love of the divine, nature and making people laugh.
What motivates you? Makes you happy?
I love knowing that I’m making a positive difference in the world. When I see things happening in the world that make our shared lives more difficult or our world less healthy, it makes me happy to know I’m doing something to help.
What advice would you give your 10-year-old self?
Smoke less weed in your teens and start practising the art of not caring what others think of you, now. Oh and maybe don’t sell that house you buy when you’re 20.
If you could make 1 global change – what would it be?
I’d introduce food allowances to bring us in line with what the planet can sustain so that everyone has enough to eat and there’s still room to reforest the world. For example steak once a month, a burger once a week, chicken and fish once a week … and as many plant-based foods as you want in between. Or I’d introduce a carbon allowance and include food in that.
What are your Top 3 achievements?
Raising an awesome and hopefully not-too-f**ed up 16 year old son.
Building and growing a thriving non-profit organisation of 20 wonderful staff, doing great things.
Learning to heal and love myself.
What does sustainability mean for you?
Living in a balanced way that causes little to no harm to the planet and future generations.
What was the most important event/influence that changed your perspective?
Seeing Chris Jordan’s trailer for the film Albatross back in 2014 and witnessing the extent of plastic pollution … it was the first time I’d been shaken to my core over an environmental issue, connected with a deep sense of grief, and decided to act upon it.
